Zocor, sold generically as simvastatin, carries an increased risk of muscle injury, warns the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The agency is also warning patients that mixing Zocor with certain other medications can increase the risk of muscle injury. While all statins carry a risk of muscle injury, in rare cases it can progress to a more severe form of muscle injury which can then lead to kidney damage, kidney failure and possibly death.

Merck, the maker of Zocor, has also been asked to change the medication label to warn doctors against prescribing greater than 40 mg. to patients that are taking diltizem to treat high blood pressure.
